Top Safari Activity Alternatives to Game Drives
Why Go Beyond the Game Drive?
Picture this: you’re seated in an open-air vehicle, camera ready, as a lioness stalks gracefully across the savannah. Game drives are undeniably iconic – they’re the heart and soul of any safari experience. But here’s the thing: today’s adventurous travellers are craving something more. They want variety, deeper meaning, and connections that go beyond traditional wildlife viewing.
The modern safari enthusiast seeks experiences that create lasting memories and offer a more personal connection to Africa’s incredible landscapes and cultures. Alternative safari activities don’t just add variety to your itinerary; they create a more immersive, sustainable, and unforgettable journey. At Asilia, we’ve crafted these extraordinary alternatives across many of our camps, each designed to reveal a different side of Africa’s magic.
Ready to discover what lies beyond the humble game drive? Here are our top 7 safari activities that will transform your African adventure.
Stargazing Under African Skies
When the blazing African sun sets and the campfire crackles to life, something truly spectacular begins overhead. Africa’s remote wilderness locations offer some of the world’s most pristine stargazing conditions, with virtually no light pollution to dim the celestial sparkle.

Imagine lying back at our camps in the Serengeti, Mara Naboisho Conservancy, or Ruaha, as billions of stars emerge like scattered diamonds across the vast night sky. The southern hemisphere reveals constellations invisible from northern latitudes – the Southern Cross, the Coal Sack Nebula, and the brilliant Centaurs constellation become your evening’s view.
Our guided stargazing experiences transform a simple night under the stars into an educational journey through African astronomy and traditional star lore. Some camps even offer romantic sleepouts or why not combine stargazing with night game drives, where you might spot nocturnal creatures like bush babies and genets while learning about the cosmic wonders above.
Walking Safaris: Explore the Bush on Foot
There’s something primal and exhilarating about experiencing the wilderness on foot. Walking safaris strip away the barriers between you and nature, creating heart-racing moments and intimate discoveries that simply aren’t possible from a vehicle.

Led by expert walking guides, these immersive tracking adventures reveal the smaller details that bring the bush to life – the intricate patterns of animal tracks in the sand, the medicinal properties of indigenous plants, and the fascinating world of insects and birds. Your senses become heightened as you learn to read the landscape like a book.
Our camps in Ruaha, Tarangire, Naboisho Conservancy, and Nyerere offer some of Africa’s finest walking safari programs. Whether you’re tracking elephants through acacia woodlands or following ancient animal paths along seasonal rivers, these unique safari experiences create memories that will stay with you long after you return home.
Hot-Air Balloon Safaris
Few experiences rival the magic of drifting over the Serengeti or Masai Mara at sunrise, suspended in a wicker basket as the African landscape unfolds beneath you like a living tapestry. Hot-air balloon safaris offer a bird’s-eye-view of the Great Migration, scattered wildlife, and endless plains that stretch to the horizon.

The silence is profound as you float above acacia trees and winding rivers, watching elephants move like tiny grey dots and catching glimpses of predators on the hunt. These early morning adventures typically last about an hour, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush – a perfect combination of adventure and luxury.
Hot-air balloon safaris are particularly magical for honeymooners and first-time visitors to Africa, creating once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities and romantic memories against the backdrop of these iconic landscapes.
Boat Safaris: Wildlife from the Water
Africa’s waterways offer a completely different perspective on wildlife viewing, revealing species and behaviours you’d never see from land. Boat safaris provide intimate encounters with hippos wallowing in muddy pools, massive crocodiles basking on riverbanks, and herds of elephants coming to drink at the water’s edge.
The peaceful glide of a boat allows you to approach aquatic birds like African fish eagles, colourful kingfishers, and elegant herons without disturbing their natural behaviours. The photographic opportunities are extraordinary – images capturing elephants silhouetted against a golden sunset as they cross the river or witnessing the explosive power of hippos as they establish territory.

Our boating safaris in Nyerere, along the Rufiji River, or around Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria, showcase Tanzania’s incredible aquatic ecosystems.
Birding: A Safari for the Senses
With over 1,000 bird species calling East Africa home, birding safaris are among the most rewarding yet underrated safari activities. These experiences engage the senses, from melodic calls to brilliant flashes of brightly coloured feathers.

The green season (November to April) is particularly spectacular for bird-watching safaris, when migratory species arrive from Europe and Asia, joining Africa’s resident birds in a symphony of colour and song. Locations like Ruaha, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara become birding paradises during this time.
Birding offers a meditative, educational experience that’s perfect for families, solo travellers, and anyone seeking a deeper connection with nature. Our expert guides help identify species, explain behaviours, and share fascinating insights about avian ecology.
Conservation Experiences
For travellers who want to understand the real challenges and successes of African conservation, these behind-the-scenes experiences offer incredible insights into Asilia’s conservation partners and ongoing projects. Conservation safaris reveal the dedicated work happening daily to protect vulnerable wildlife, local communities, and ecosystems.

Activities might include rhino tracking at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, visiting community conservation projects, or participating in anti-poaching briefings with local rangers. These experiences are particularly meaningful for responsible travellers, repeat visitors to Africa, and those interested in conservation careers.
These conservation experiences directly align with Asilia’s impact model, highlighting how tourism supports vital conservation efforts. You’ll meet the people on the front lines of wildlife protection and learn how your visit contributes to the long-term success of these projects.
Cultural Encounters with Local Communities
Africa’s cultural diversity is as remarkable as its wildlife, and respectful cultural encounters on safari offer profound insights into traditional ways of life that have coexisted with wildlife for centuries. These experiences with Maasai, Samburu, or Hadzabe communities are designed with sensitivity and genuine collaboration.

Participate in traditional beading workshops, visit family homesteads, or gather around fires for storytelling sessions that have been passed down through generations. These cultural encounters are conducted ethically, ensuring that tourism supports cultural preservation and community empowerment rather than exploitation.
Learning about traditional conservation practices, medicinal plant knowledge, and ancient hunting techniques provides context for modern conservation efforts. These safari experiences create meaningful connections between travellers and local communities, fostering mutual understanding and respect.
Other Activities Worth Mentioning
The world of alternative safari activities extends even further, with options to suit every interest and adventure level:
Night Game Drives reveal the secret world of nocturnal species, such as aardvarks and porcupines, that remain hidden during daylight hours. The African bush transforms after dark, with different sounds, smells, and sightings, creating an entirely new safari experience.
Photography workshops elevate your safari images from snapshots to portfolio-worthy photographs, whether through in-camp instruction with our expert guides or specialised photography trips led by visiting professionals.
Family safari activities engage younger travellers with tracking lessons and hands-on conservation activities that make learning about wildlife fun and memorable.
Sleepouts and Star Beds combine romance with adventure, offering the ultimate experience beneath the stars, whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon or simply seeking a unique connection with the African wilderness.
Cycling safaris provide an active adventure option in some select conservancies in the Laikipia region, where you can explore landscapes on two wheels while spotting wildlife from a completely different perspective.

This is the best tour on the east coast! It was amazing how many places we visited and what great memories we made!
This was not our first time going to here. It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
We always stay at here when in town. The location is great, staff is wonderful and we love the overall feel. Beautiful view from the here.
